The insider... fuel for the week ahead

Delta Swamp Rock + Chocolate of the week = a happy Tluxe team, and fuel for the week ahead

Ever wondered what it’s like behind the scenes of a design studio? While you’re browsing our new autumn collection for 2012, right now most of the team are already plugging away on production for next year’s spring/summer collection. And our creative director Becs is working on design ideas for autumn/winter 2013.

To help get us through the next slightly hectic few weeks we’re mostly listening to Delta Swamp Rock (and loving Leon Russell’s Out in the Woods), and mostly eating… chocolate. While we love the organic goodness of Loving Earth’s raw chocolate with superfoods like goji berries and acai, our guilty pleasure this week is the special edition Picnic Cookie Crunch bar. “In another life,” says Becs, “I would’ve been a sweet-taster.”

Eco clothing tip of the week

Think about how you wash you clothes. Image thanks to Zena Holloway.

Research has shown that the greatest damage clothes do to our environment is not in their construction and distribution, but in washing them. Throwing a load in the washing machine not only involves large quantities of water but also energy and chemicals. Greener threads, like our very own Tluxe spring/summer collection, are those that can be cold washed and line dried.

The next best aspect in terms of earth-friendly clothing, according to eco aficionados treehugger.com, relates to longevity. And this has as much to do with styling as it has to do with the quality of the fabric you choose. In fact, you’re better off choosing a classic style in traditional high quality cotton, that you’d still wear 10 years down the track, than an of-the-moment number in organic bamboo, which will end up in the charity bins in six months time.

And of course, if you can combine style with organic and natural fibres, like we try our very best to do here at Tluxe, then you’re onto a real winner, for both you and the longevity of the planet. For other ideas on fashion with a conscience, check out some of our favourite blogs, including British Vogue’s Green Style, US site Ecouterre.com, and our very own, Australian-based How Big is your Eco.

The insider... why Tluxe is good for you

At Tluxe we try our hardest to really think about the impact our clothes have on the planet, and ultimately on you. Where we can, we use sustainable fabrics such as bamboo, Tencel, organic cotton, and natural fibres such as silk, linen, cashmere and Merino wool. We also make sure the fabrics are of the best quality, so yes, that may mean they’re slightly pricier but it also means they’ll last you beyond one season, and definitely beyond a few washes.

We have all our products made locally here in Australia including our labels and swing tags. Less air miles in the production process means less pollution, we use less energy and as a result leave less of a carbon footprint. Keeping it local also means the people who make our clothes get fair pay and working conditions.

If you’re keen on ethical fashion but aren’t sure where to find it take a look at our friend Matthew Paroz’s How Big is Your Eco fashion directory. A guide to all things fashionable and earth-friendly, Matt suggests a few ways to eco-fy your wardrobe, starting with the life of a garment. “Look for pieces that are well made and will still look great in years to come,” Matt tells us. “Know that organic cotton is better than standard cotton, but that cotton is a very water-intensive fabric. Educate and inform yourself.” Listen and learn.

    Mama moment... Miranda Kerr

Australian model Miranda Kerr’s spectacular return to star form at last week’s David Jones catwalk show reminded us just how much we love a stylish mum.

We love Miranda’s style, but it’s her health conscious approach to life, which really sets her apart. The model’s trim, post-baby bod is one part genetics to two parts healthy eating, pilates, and yoga, care of our favourite Bondi yoga teacher, Charlotte Dodson. Charlotte has not only been Miranda’s personal yoga guru for years, but both ladies are fans of Tluxe's stylish take on yoga wear.

"It's refreshing to find a label that designs stylish, eco-friendly pieces that I can wear to teach and practice in,” says Charlotte. “Ultra-comfortable, skin-healthy organic cotton jerseys and bamboo are naturally perfect for yoga."

Watch out for Charlotte sporting Tluxe on the August 29 edition of Australia’s Next Top Model on Fox8, where she teaches the young stars the finer details of a sun salutation wearing our Fatima hooded poncho, Bambi leggings, and Anya stretch wool fleece top.
